My major research interest concerns the early history of actinopterygians, including their phylogenetic relationships and macroevolutionary patterns and processes. The latter is a huge issue and can only be assessed after reaching a rather good, comprehensive understanding of basal actinopterygian interrelationships. Thus, I am very interested in all aspects of the anatomy, diversity, evolutionary history, biology, and biogeography of Mesozoic Actinopterygians.
Between 2006 and 2009 I completed a systematic revision (taxonomoy and phylogeny) of the family Semionotidae, with special emphasis on the European forms. This revision drove me not only to face the problem of the definition of the whole clade Semionotiformes (lepisosteids, semionotids, macrosemiids), but also to several problems concerning the relationshionships of basal neopterygians. Consequently, muy current research program is dedicated to taxonomic and phylogenetic studies of basal neopterygians, including the analysis of several cases of conflicting homologies, with the aim to improve our knowledge of the origine and early evolution of the Neopterygii.
